Our life coach is none other than our friend Reetam Mukherjee — himself an Ataxia patient and currently working as a Clinical Psychologist at Life Guidance Centre. He is going to deliver his talk with the understanding and requirements of us , “Ataxia patients”.
In a world that doesn’t always understand our pace, it’s important to pause and check in with our inner selves. Reetam is leading this conversation because he truly understands the nuances of our journey. Come as you are with your frustrations, your hopes, or simply your need for a supportive ear because self-care isn’t selfish; it’s survival.

On the occasion of the 8th Foundation Day of the Ataxia Awareness Society, an educational awareness session was organized on 14th March 2026 for the students of Brijlal Jindal College of Physiotherapy at the auditorium of Ferguson College, Pune.
The program commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp followed by Saraswati Vandana, setting a positive and respectful tone for the event. The session aimed to spread awareness about Ataxia, a rare neurological disorder, among physiotherapy students and attendees.
The students of the college presented an informative and impactful skit, beautifully depicting the daily challenges faced by individuals living with Ataxia. Through their performance, they sensitized the audience to the physical and emotional struggles associated with this condition.
The guiding patron of the society, Dr. Apurva Puranik, Senior Neurologist from Indore, addressed the gathering through a video message. He welcomed the participants and highlighted the various awareness initiatives undertaken by the society. He emphasized that the organization regularly conducts programs related to speech therapy, physiotherapy, genetic counseling, and diet counseling, which have been beneficial for patients.
The Director of the society, Ms. Swasti Wagh, who herself is living with Ataxia, extended a warm welcome to all the attendees and shared her perspective, inspiring the audience with her strength and dedication.
Society members Mr. Manan Gupta and Mr. Anshu Jaiswal spoke about the journey of the organization over the past eight years, shedding light on its achievements as well as the challenges faced along the way. They then invited the keynote speaker, Dr. Sudhir Kothari, Senior Neurologist and Head of the Department of Neurology at Pune Hospital, who brings over 30 years of experience in the field.
Dr. Kothari delivered an insightful session on “Understanding Ataxia Disease and its Management.” He elaborated on the symptoms, diagnosis, and progression of the disease, while also sharing his vast clinical experience. He further highlighted that patients with Ataxia may also have associated metabolic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, which require timely identification and treatment.
The second keynote speaker, Dr. Renuka Naik, Neurophysiologist and Assistant Professor at Brijlal Jindal College of Physiotherapy, conducted a session on “Barriers and Facilitators for Recovery in Ataxia Patients.” Her session provided valuable insights into rehabilitation challenges and strategies for improving patient outcomes.
An interactive quiz session was conducted for the participants, where questions related to the seminar topics were asked. Winners were recognized and awarded by the Ataxia Awareness Society, Indore.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Shweta Kulkarni, Assistant Professor at Brijlal Jindal College and a volunteer of the society. She expressed gratitude to the guest speakers and presented them with mementos as a token of appreciation.

On the occasion of world Rare Disease Day which is celebrated on 28th February, the Organization for Rare Diseases India (ORDI) - conducted 10 th edition of 'Race for 7' marathon on 23rd of February 2025. Purpose of arranging the Event was to raise awareness about rare diseases and to empower patients and their families in India. The event,' Race for 7 ', symbolized the challenges and resilience of those affected by 7,000 rare diseases, uniting 7,000 participants in a 7-kilometer run. This year the marathon was simultaneously conducted in 21 cities of India. The Ataxia Awareness Society (AAS) actively participated from over six cities - Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, and Jaipur. The dedicated Ataxia warriors their caregivers and volunteers played a pivotal role in raising awareness about ataxia . In addition to their athletic participation, AAS members distributed ataxia pamphlets, effectively educating the public about the Ataxia and its impact on individuals. Their efforts not only spread awareness but also strengthened the rare disease community, fostering hope, inclusion, and support for those affected.

On the occasion of the 7th Foundation Day of Ataxia Awareness Society(AAS) , a highly informative webinar on "Genetic Counselling in Ataxia – An Introduction" was conducted on Saturday, 15 March 2025, by AAS in collaboration with Genetic Counselling India. The session aimed to spread awareness about the role of genetics in Ataxia, the importance of genetic counselling, and the current spectrum of genetic ataxias in India.
The webinar commenced with a warm welcome note by Dr. Apoorva Pauranik,a Senior Neurologist and Patron of AAS. He emphasized the importance of role of genetic awareness and genetic counselling in managing Ataxia effectively.

Dr. Bharat Rawat, a senior cardiologist from Indore, interacted with heart patients and high blood pressure patients from across India. During the session, he guided participants on how to recognise early warning signs and adopt positive lifestyle changes. He advised participants to:
Maintain strict and regular monitoring of blood pressure
Immediately consult a doctor in case of chest pain
Take prescribed medications regularly
Include physical activities such as Surya Namaskar, strength training, or walking according to individual capacity

Dr. Poonam Vishal Jwell highlighted the importance of proper nutrition for heart patients. She emphasized:
Eating an early dinner
Maintaining a balanced intake of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats
Reducing the use of oil, sugar, and salt in daily diet
Ensuring each meal includes salads and protein-rich foods
Using healthy fats and strictly avoiding packed, fried, and processed foods
Preferring home-cooked traditional Indian meals prepared with less oil and salt
Maintaining adequate hydration throughout the day
She strongly advised complete avoidance of sweets, sugary beverages, alcohol, and smoking.
While explaining the importance of mindful eating, she stated that controlling one’s mind helps in choosing foods that are truly beneficial for overall health. She encouraged participants to stay attentive to their body’s needs and follow a balanced diet.
For maintaining positive energy and mental well-being, she recommended regular meditation and dedicating time to personal hobbies.

AAS arranged a webinar on "The Impact of Positive Thinking", conducted by Dr. Gurmeet Narang, renowned as the Man of Happiness. Dr. Narang is an industrialist, humanitarian, motivational speaker, author, motivational speaker and also happiness teacher .
Dr. Gurmeet Narang began the session by accenting the importance of positive thinking in daily life. He shared his personal journey and how adopting a positive outlook transformed his life and career.
He clarified that positive thinking does not mean ignoring reality but approaching life's challenges with a constructive mindset.
At the same time it is very necessary to Acknowledge and confronting negative thoughts instead of suppressing them.
The participants got highly motivated after the webinar and learn about the benefits of maintaining a positive mindset.

Chapter) spoke on essential diet for Ataxia patients to cope up with their muscle weakness and associated diseases like diabeties,hypertension,heart problem etc. She also suggested healthy diet tips in this pandemic period and which diet can help to overcome extra weakness and fatigue after corona.

Slurred speech is very common problem among ataxia patients. Ataxia Awareness Society (AAS) organized virtual workshops on Speech Therapy. The 5 sessions of this webinar (on May 22nd ,24th ,28th June 8th and 18th 2020) were conducted with the help of ZOOM APP & Google Meet APP.
Speech & Language Therapist Dr. Vibhuti Birthare demonstrates variety of pronunciations and Speech Therapy Exercises to ataxia patients. Everybody actively participated in the webinar by performing exercise instructed by Dr. Vibhuti. The basic objective behind organizing this meeting was to help them, so that they can speak with clarity and as well as audible to others.
